‘V’ Homes Campaign - Enlisting American Homes in Civilian Defense
The ‘V’ Homes campaign ("Victory Home") began in 1942 and encouraged the public to ensure their homes were set up to deal with an emergency, primarily conceived to be from an enemy air raid.
A ‘V’ Home followed blackout regulations, attics were clear of unnecessary inflammables, fire-fighting equipment was available, and the house had a refuge room. Families in Victory Homes were also required to purchase war bonds, ensure salvage was collected, and avoid spreading rumors.
To ensure a home met the requirements, a local Air Raid Warden would visit, and if it passed, the home would display a "V-Home" window card.
