OCD News Letter
The OCD News Letter was the Official Bulletin of the Office of Civilian Defence (OCD). It was a four-page pamphlet published irregularly (except for June 1942 when four issues were published that month) with issue Number 1 dated September 19, 1942.
The bulletin contained various articles concerning the OCD, updates from the Director, news from State and local defense councils, lists of OCD publications, regional appointments, blackout and dimout guides, as well as articles on salvage campaigns and home front news.
The last issue appears to be Number 30, dated April 15, 1943.
The U.S. Government Publishing Office (GPO) has an archive of 28 of the OCD New Letters.
“Why This News Letter...
CIVILIAN DEFENSE is a new problem. It was created by modern methods of warfare which minimize battlefronts and rain death and destruction on total populations.
The purpose of Civilian Defense are to protect the life and property of civilians in event of emergency and to help them prepare for the part they must play in preserving the freedoms which this Nation guarantees. Plans and programs for both purposes are being prepared by the Office of Civilian Defence. These will be sent officially to Governors and to State defense councils, through which their adaptation and application in localities are to be effected.
The purpose of the Office of Civilian Defense News Letter are to call widespread attention to plans and programs, after they have been transmitted officially, to report successful experiences of States and localities in the development of programs adequate to meet every civilian defense need. The News Letter will be issued whenever there is a story of importance to tell. No attempt will be made to publish it regularly.
